Like more mass shootings in Texas we have Hurricane Dorian to serve as a distraction away from the real news of Donald Trump continuing to Make America Worse Again with his trade idiocy and other fascist policies.
Trump’s tariff-taxes are really fines because they are Trump’s way of punishing consumers for their purchasing choices, which The Donald doesn’t like. So he’s a fascist, as well as an ignoramus.
When the gubmint imposes fines against consumers and distorts the markets, it then likely becomes more expensive for people to get what they want or need, and thus the people’s standard of living declines. Nevertheless, what’s important to Trump is that he imposes his ignorance on the people. That’s what matters to fascists and dictators. (See Venezuela and Maduro.)
Freedom — i.e. free trade and free markets — is what contributes greatly to the rise in the standard of living of the people. We know that from the facts of history.
And by the way, Trump has been on this trade war stuff for years. He has stated that he wants a trade war, so really Trump is the one who started the trade war now.
(In a 2011 post I had linked to a Fox News article quoting Trump in a 2010 interview, in which he said, “I would love to have a trade war with China.” But that link is no longer working, and I can’t find any other articles online quoting Trump from that interview. Hmmm. So I had to link to the Wayback Machine snapshot of that page. Are TPTB going to delete that page, too? We can’t let the people know that Trump has wanted to start a trade war with China for years!)
So yes, Trump started this trade war, because he wants to have a trade war with a “big” country, to make himself feel big and tough, regardless of how reckless and destructive such actions are. It’s all about Trump and his pathetic, weak little ego. So with his tariff-tax fines he is really punishing Americans for their purchasing choices. “Do what I say, because I’m the boss, or else!” the fascist demands.
Sure, he might really believe the myths and fairy tales about trade deficits, and he might really believe what he’s saying in his ignorant rants and tweets, but even if Mnuchin, Kudlow and others are advising him to knock it off he won’t listen to anything that goes against his long-held fantastical false beliefs.
And as I wrote in an earlier post, “trade deficits” mean nothing. They have nothing to do with anything of a “competitive” nature. As Don Boudreaux pointed out, America as a whole nation, Americans and their businesses are not representing a single entity “America” and competing with businesspeople in any other country as a single entity.
The American economy, though, is not remotely analogous to Caterpillar, Inc. Americans do not work for America, Inc. And there are no goods or services that we Americans are managed as workers to produce for sale to non-Americans. America is not a business that operates according to a shared, unitary plan the success or failure of which is recorded on a meaningful budget. Thus, the American economy – unlike an actual business firm, household, or government – is not an organization that can spend too much or go into debt. In reality, America, Inc., does not exist. Being non-existent, it cannot earn, spend, lend, borrow, or budget.
No, in reality (which is not where Trump is living, for sure), each business is competing with other businesses to earn the purchases of consumers. So this “trade deficit” thing means nothing in the real world.
But the deficits that DO matter are the ones that ignorant Trump DOESN’T care about: the BUDGET deficit! As I wrote in an earlier post, Trump and his fellow Democrats and Rethuglicans are spending like drunken sailors and squandering taxpayer money away, a $4 trillion budget with a deficit of nearly $1 trillion. Jeepers, give a “businessman” government power and other people’s money and he’ll squander it away, just like the rest of the corrupt, short-sighted bureaucrats in Washington.
Read Laurence Vance on how the Repugnicans in CONgress are just as much big-spending crooks as the Democrats.
But Trump loves government power, the power to steal the earnings away from the people. Don’t be fooled by his tax-cutting rhetoric, or even his actual tax cuts. The individual tax cuts are really a sham in the long term because they will expire in a few years, at which time people’s taxes will go UP. And that’s not even taking into account a possible Democrat getting elected President in 2020 and raising taxes even more. The Trump corporate tax cuts were permanent, but there shouldn’t even be a corporate tax because all the people who own or work for corporations are already being taxed (i.e. robbed by gubmint thugs) from their individual earnings.
Besides Don Boudreax’s article (linked above) on trade deficits, see Murray Rothbard, Robert Murphy, and Richard Ebeling as well.
Besides the trade fascism, The Donald also now wants to empower Big Tech including Amazon and Apple to determine who should own a gun and who should not. See The Daily Caller and the Tenth Amendment Center on that issue.
Do we really want these already-ultra-biased tech companies to use their biased pre-programmed software to decide who is theoretically “potentially violent” and could cause trouble, and thus data to be used by gubmint to disarm totally innocent people who have never harmed anyone based on, what, their political views, or being a part of the non-Left? And at the same time the military is developing a program to detect “fake news” to censor “disinformation,” i.e. information questioning or criticizing government bureaucrats’ decisions.
Does Donald Trump understand that these are bad ideas? Does he understand anything?
It seems obvious to me that Trump was never really a “businessman who didn’t really want to be President but is doing so begrudgingly,” but is in fact someone who had been running for President for decades and decades. Fragile ego needs power over others. These narcissistic megalomaniacs are all the same, in business or politics or religion, or whatever. And look at this piece on Brett Kavanaugh, who, like Elena Kagan, had been running for Supreme Court for decades as well. They’re all the same, flocking to Washington to rule over you.
